Forums

Hey guys, glad to see the community is still sticking together. To encourage this I set up a forum, which you can get to by clicking that link on the right side of the page. WordPress comments aren’t really a great communication tool, so I thought the forum would do a better job. It’s not super polished, but I’ll get on that at some point. Currently there is general discussion and server posting boards, but if anyone wants something else added let me know.

For anyone hosting a server, I can make a board for your server specifically and give you moderation on it, so let me know.

Well, not so good news, guys.

I’m not going to go into the details, but because of living arrangements for the time being, I’m not going to be able to have the servers running right now. It’s not that I’m having any kind of crisis, but as a college student in a position of varying living arrangements, multiple servers are not an easy thing to keep maintained for long periods of time.

WHAT THIS MEANS:
As of now the servers are offline and I have no ETA of when I will be able to put them back up and have them stay up. It could literally be anywhere from a month to a year or more from now, so just consider them totally offline.

I have the world file from the SMP server available for download, so you can download it and play on it single player if you would like. You will need WinRAR or another extractor to open the file, and you can look up online how to replace your saved game files for Minecraft.

I do also have all of the server information and game files saved. If anyone would like to try hosting any servers under the AwesomeCraft name, I’d be more than happy to guide you through it and provide the existing server files, so you can pick up where my servers left off. I can provide technical assistance, as well as administrative access to things like the website and twitter feed.

What I will request of anyone who wants to host the servers:
—A dedicated computer for the server. One that you can reformat and are not using for anything else. A Pentium D/Core 2 Duo/i5/i7 processor and AT LEAST 2 gigs of RAM is recommended. I was running the Classic server on a Pentium D dual core 3.2 Ghz processor with 3 gigs of RAM, and the SMP on a Core 2 Duo dual core 2.2 Ghz processor with 3.5 gigs of RAM (after the recent RAM upgrade).
—A solid, fast, STATIC IP address internet connection. I was using an upgraded Comcast residential package.
—At least basic networking and computer knowledge. The more the better.

Anyone interested, let me know, and I’ll do what I can to help you out.

On a final note, I’d like to thank everyone for being a part of the community we all have created. You guys are the reason SMP is more fun than single player, despite bugs, glitches, downtime, and the occasional stolen diamond.

Hopefully I’ll see you guys soon.

Downtime

Having some major provider issues right now, so the server may be down for quite a while, Gonna have to be patient on this one.

Moar RAM

Tuesday, February 15th, 2011

Added some more RAM to the server today. This should help in general with lag, crashes, logging in, and other stuff. I expect it to help with the login timeouts that have been an issue recently, but I haven’t done enough testing to confirm RAM was the issue, so we shall see. Let me know if you see a difference in performance anywhere. This will also help me decide how to go about setting up the Hell map when portals are working some day.

Real-Time SMP Map

Monday, February 7th, 2011

Head on over to the SMP map page (link on the right sidebar) and you can see the SMP map in all it’s Minecraftness. It will update player locations live and update map tiles as chunks are modified. This does mean that a lot of the map will just be blank space until someone goes to that tile and modifies a block, so anything you want to see on the map that is not there yet, just go place a block somewhere on that tile. Have fun!

GUESS WHAT!

The server is back =D

Now since It is 4 AM and I have no idea how Bukkit works, I’m going to assume the whitelist is functioning properly, and let the repercussions of that assumption hit me later. For now, enjoy.

On a smaller note, do not try and contact me via comments. I do review comments and will see it, but will delete it since the comment section is not the place to ask me things. There is a dedicated email for that.

Progress?

Thursday, January 20th, 2011

So the developers of Bukkit  released a new update. You can read the details here, but basically it means they are not much further along in completion of Bukkit, (as far as I could tell), so some more waiting needs to be done unfortunately. Until then, there is still an up-to-date non-whitelist server there for your pleasure, with a landscape that  I must say I like quite a bit. Some members are building some nice structures in there, so if you want in, pick your gamble. It MIGHT become the main server, depending how developed it gets (which is apparently not very, so nevermind I guess).

tl;dr: I blame Canada.

Not My Fault! =D (Updated)

Friday, January 14th, 2011

Alright, so the almighty Hmod server wrapper that we know and love for the SMP is currently not updated to work with the newest MineCraft update. How long it is until this is fixed is anyone’s guess, but as I understand it Hmod has an entirely new server program due any day, so we will probably get both at the same time. In the mean time, I have a regular old nothing-fancy fully updated server running in place of the actual AwesomeCraft world, so that will be there until further notice if you would like to color sheep and beat up a squid while the actual server is down.

—UPDATE—

So as it  turns out the hMod people don’t care about MineCraft anymore, so with this new update, hMod is literally gone forever. That said, the  team working on ‘Bukkit’, the new software that is the official takeover of hMod, is now under immense pressure to get finished. The temp server will still be there, since I have no intention of having the official AwesomeCraft SMP up without a whitelist. I’m watching closely, as to have the regular SMP map up ASAP.

CLASSIC BACK!

Quick Update

Saturday, January 8th, 2011

Alright, so as you know the Classic is not back up yet, and I have not had much time at all to work on it. You have to remember I have a job and friends and family, so thank you for understanding when I can’t get stuff done as fast as I’d have liked.

Anyways, it looks like I have a faulty hard drive in the classic server, I’m surprised I got as far as I did with it before figuring out something was wrong with it. I’ll try moving the partition or getting a new hard drive in it. What I actually did was take one drive out of the old server’s RAID array and use that, unaware it was faulty since the RAID setup was doing exactly as it was supposed to. So, small steps, I’m getting there.
